Yet more games completed, and other news

Posted by Tracy Poff on April 17, 2013

Oh, I’m really on a roll. Lately, I’ve beaten lots of games.

First, I beat Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Videogame on the 10th. I was playing this one in co-op with Dylan. It’s around four hours long, and it’s not terribly good–amusing enough, but not worth playing again.

On the 12th, I beat Kirby’s Dream Land. Great game, if short. Fairly easy, though I had a little trouble with the final boss. Turns out that flying over him is a bad idea–better just to stay on the ground and jump over him when he runs at you.

On the 15th, I played a little Super Princess Peach. Turns out it’s a good game. I’m really enjoying it.

Yesterday, the 16th, I beat no fewer than three games: Felix the Cat, Legendary Wings, and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

Felix the Cat is easy and not very good. Dull levels, unpleasant controls in some situations.

Legendary Wings is quite hard–I used lots of save states to beat it. I could have gotten by using far fewer than I did, but I was more interested in seeing the game than challenging myself, in this case, so I just made it easy on myself. Dodging was still a bit tricky, in some places. Anyway, the game is okay, but the levels are very repetitive–same boss on each level, more or less the same progression of enemies. Later levels just have more. Not a bad game, and I may even play it again, some time.

Super Mario Land 2 is good–much better than its predecessor, too. I did miss seeing much of several levels at the end, since I flew over them, but otherwise I played through every level–you have to, I think. It’s not terribly difficult, but it is fun.

Completed more games!

Posted by Tracy Poff on April 6, 2013

Between yesterday and today, I’ve completed both Super Mario USA and Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels). Played both alternating with Dylan, so I didn’t personally beat every level, but it was close enough. Huzzah!

Super Mario 2 is absurdly cruel and difficult. I can’t imagine trying to beat it on the original system, having to restart from the beginning upon losing. Fortunately, I was playing it on Super Mario All-Stars, which lets you start over on the same level when you run out of lives. Even so, it took about 9 hours of work to finish the game. And Dylan and I are by no means bad at Mario. It’s just ridiculous–pretty much no chance to get extra lives, few mushrooms, absurdly difficult jumps everywhere, and the less said about that level full of springs the better. I’m fairly sure I’ll never play it again–it’s just too much work, and the levels were mostly not even fun. I’m glad it’s done with.

Super Mario USA, by contrast, was fairly fun, and much easier. It was a bit annoying to have to start over at the beginning of the world upon dying, but even with that, it took only about 4 hours to finish the game. Granted, it’s got fewer levels than Super Mario 2, as well–20 or so, I think, vs. 52 in Super Mario 2. Though the levels are probably individually quite a bit bigger… it’s hard to compare them. Either way, Super Mario USA is far less sadistically difficult. I can imagine playing it again, some time, though probably not for a while.

Finally beat Super Mario Land, yesterday. Turns out that the game is shorter than I thought–just four worlds. Of course, it’s got a harder second quest after you’ve beaten it once, so there’s still a bit more to do, should I desire.

Tried out Kirby’s Return to Dreamland for Wii. Seems pretty cool.

Played a little of Batman: The Brave and The Bold – The Videogame. It’s okay. Not my favorite style of game, but it’s amusing.
